Tuam Development's team unbeaten league run came to an end on Sunday last as Galwegians maintained their 100 per cent winning start to the season with a 24-14 victory at a wet and windy Garraun Park.
Both sides went into this game sitting at the summit of the J1C table, tied on 15 points apiece albeit Tuam having played one game more. There was little to choose between the sides in the early exchanges with the inclimate weather having a big impact on proceedings. The driving rain made ball handling difficult while it also had a bearing on underfoot conditions as twice Tuam players looked to be gone clear only for them to lose their footing.
A home try did arrive in the 22nd minute when Luke Cronin somehow managed to wriggle away from the Galwegians defence to find a gap and run in under the posts for a fine individual try. Eoghan Kelly added the extras.
Galwegians went in search of a try of their own and although they couldn't breach the Tuam defence in the opening half, they levelled matters with one of their second rows powering over for a try five minutes after the restart. A second converted try arrived three minutes later as the away side began to dominate, enjoying the majority of possession in the second half.
However, Tuam defended bravely but just after the hour mark, Galwefians got in for their third. The bonus point was sealed with a fourth try in the 68th minute but Tuam kept plugging away and were rewarded for their efforts with a 74th minute try.
A great drive by the Tuam pack, led by the returning Dave Cunningham, was capitalised by Owen Swan who spotted a gap and ran in under the posts for Tuam's second try. Kelly added the conversion.
Tuam went in search of a bonus point of their own but despite a strong finish, there were no further changes to the scoreboard as Galwegians won this top of the table clash 24-14.
It was great to see such good numbers togging on what was a miserable day weatherwise. Great to see a mixture of the young and not so young donning the Tuam colours. As mentioned was great to see David Cunningham back in a Tuam jersey and he had a fine game too.
Next up for the development team is Carrick on Shannon at 2:30pm on Sunday, November 26th at garraun Park.
