CURLEY BOWL FINAL- MATCH REPORT
TUAM DEVELOPMENT 16 CLAREMORRIS COLTS 12
Tuam Development had to dig deep before they were eventually crowned the Curley Bowl winners for 2024 at Dunmore this afternoon.
An eighth minute Oisín McWalter penalty got Tuam off the mark before a 17th minute Claremorris penalty levelled matters.
There was little to choose between the sides in the first half. Claremorris were definitely physically bigger and stronger which reflected in their dominance in the scrum. A young Tuam outfit on the other hand looked dangerous on the break.
The first and what proved to be only try of the match arrived in the 32nd minute. As they entered Claremorris's '22, Tuam built up the phases and forced the Mayo side into the concession of multiple penalties. With penalty advantage on their side, Tuam spread the ball from left to right to allow the unmarked, Liam O'Shaugnessy, to touch down in the corner. McWalter added the conversion to give Tuam a valuable seven point advantage, a big lead in a tight contest like this.
Tuam took their 10-3 lead to the break but Claremorris, having let Tuam off the hook by missing an early penalty opportunity, converted a 46th minute one to reduce Tuam's lead to four.
Both sides gave it their all in the next twenty minutes as the game was played between the '22s. Turnovers, knock ons under pressure and relieving kicks were the order of the day as both sides denied the other territorial gains.
It looked like the only way either team would make anymore scoring inroads would be by the boot rather than through tries and so it proved. Tuam, up to now, were dealing with the increased pressure being applied by the Colts until they buckled in the 65th minute.
Tuam's Matas Sadauskas was sent to the sin bin for an infringement and Claremorris converted the resulting penalty to put just one point between the sides.
However, Tuam went down the other end and won a massive penalty which Oisín converted to restore Tuam's four point lead. Claremorris, with their numerical advantage, responded with yet another penalty to put the minimum between them once more, 13-12 now.
With the game in the melting pot, Claremorris were reduced to fourteen men with a 78th minute sinbinning and McWalter made no mistake with the penalty kick. Claremorris couldn't find that elusive try as Tuam held on for a hard earned win.
Well done to all the lads. A great team performance seeing them over the line. Mitchell Adeyeye, Stephen Leo, Cian Breathnach McGinn all led what was a brilliant defensive effort by our forwards who were aided by their backs in a game where they never trailed. Everyone putting in a brilliant shift in what was a collective effort by Tuam.
